From fall to early spring, flu season tends to approach. While some individuals are able to get out of flu season flu-free, others will be bedridden for a week or weeks on end. Regardless, if you work with other people, you can expect to be greeted with some coughing and sneezing during flu season, whether it’s during spring or the holidays.

Flu symptoms usually include a mild to severe fever, coughing, sneezing, headache a runny nose and sore throat. This can cause you to miss out on family dinners, holiday celebrations, work events and a whole host of other social activities so it’s important to keep yourself as healthy as possible and get your Vancouver flu shot this season.

How Do Flu Shots Work?

Flu shots are essentially an injection that introduces the flu itself into your blood-stream so that your body can create antibodies against it, should it come into contact with it. Taking about 2 weeks after the shoot for the antibodies to develop, they can fight off the flu and keep you healthy.

Because the strains of the flu virus can change and adapt every season, it makes it difficult to avoid getting sick. This is because even if your body has a strong immune system which has created antibodies against the particular virus strain, the newly changed flu can still affect you before your body has a chance to create new antibodies. This is where flu shots come in.

Whos needs a Flu Shot in Vancouver?

It’s recommended that anyone 6 months of age or older get vaccinated with a flu shot. Some high-risk individuals who should get it include pregnant women, children, caregivers, people with chronic medical conditions or people with weakened immune systems. Teachers, daycare workers, hospital workers or healthcare providers in the medical field are all also at high risk of contracting the flu, and should look into getting the shot.
